Black Summer:

“Watering Our Roots”

Photographed by @Treparmalee

For the finale to Black Summer, I wanted to pay homage to Black hair as the first form of self-expression and artistry. A universal judgement free zone, a sacred space for Black hair culture; this shoot captures the intimate rituals, creativity, and cultural significance of hair care in our community.

From the first braids woven by loving hands to the bold experimentation with beads, colors, and textures, Black hair has always been a canvas for storytelling, identity, and resilience. The imagery in this project highlights the power of communal beauty practices, from oiling scalps to wrapping our hair in silk, these acts of love and heritage have been passed down for generations to protect our beauty from harm.

“Watering Our Roots” reflects on the deep connection between hair and self-definition, celebrating the creativity that has shaped our personal and collective narratives. By capturing this in an authentic, everyday setting, we honor the legacy, artistry, and freedom that Black hair represents.
